Ryan's Pick:

The Lager Queen of Minnesota

by J. Ryan Stradal

If you like beer, you’ll like this book. If you come from a complicated family, you’ll probably love it. This heartfelt, funny, and surprisingly tender novel weaves together themes of brewing, resilience, and redemption across generations. Stradal captures Midwestern grit and grace with warmth and wit, creating characters you’ll root for and moments that sneak up on you with emotion. It’s perfect for summer—ideally read on a patio, with a cold drink in hand and the sun setting in the background.

The Life We Bury
by Allen Eskens
This was my first time reading this author, and it definitely won’t be the last. The story follows Joe, a struggling student at the University of Minnesota, trying to escape his alcoholic mother while still caring for his autistic brother. For a class project, he interviews Carl, a dying Vietnam veteran and convicted child murderer living out his final days in a nursing home.
As their conversations unfold, Carl claims he's innocent of the 30-year-old crime—setting off a powerful and emotional journey that kept me hooked.
