Cheryl's Pick:

Broken

(in the best possible way)

by Jenny Lawson

A humorous and vulnerable essay collection about the author’s life, mental health struggles, and unique personality. Lawson discusses her battles with depression, anxiety, and chronic illness, using her sense of humor to bring light to the darkest moments. Whether she is sharing an awkward encounter at the post office or her journey through treatment, through laughter and tears, Lawson reminds us to embrace our own imperfections.

The Reformatory
by Tananarive Due
The Reformatory is ghostly and a bit melancholy—in the best possible way. I couldn't put it down, needing to know what would ultimately happen to the characters. When Robbie and his older sister, Gloria, find themselves alone and in dire straits, they have few people to turn to—only Ms. Lottie, an elderly woman with a broken-down truck, offers help along the way.
Gloria is a strong character you’ll find yourself rooting for, and Robbie reminds us that our talents can be used for either good or evil. The deep connections between the characters in The Reformatory serve as a powerful reminder that love and strong will can prevail—sometimes.
