Hello Library Friends,

I like to say that the library is really about the people, not the books. We see around 120,000 visits every year, and over 10,000 of you have library cards! Serving you is a foundational piece of our mission.

It's important, however, to also think about the people working here. The people that serve the people! Along those lines, I'm thrilled to share that two of our team members received recognition at a recent City Employee Appreciation Lunch.

Becky Long was honored with an Above & Beyond award for her work with our teen population. Sean Buchanan was recognized as an All-Star for his many great qualities, including his work with our Passport program.

I'm sure many of you have had your days made by one or both of these great people over the years.

Congratulations Becky and Sean!

Warm regards,

Ryan Johnson

OFPL Director

Bloom

by Kevin Panetta

Bloom is a beautiful graphic novel stylized in hues of blue. It is a
perfect coming-of-age novel for LGBTQ+ youth, or youth in general,
just trying to find their path in life. It chronicles a blooming (pun intended)
romance between two teens who enjoy baking. The romance between the main characters is perfectly
curated and jumps off the page. This is a book that I will read again and
again!

A psalm for the wild-built
by Becky Chambers
I, fellow readers, am tired.
I look out into the world and feel the weight of it all. I look into myself and feel lost. Have I done enough? Am I enough? Becky Chambers’ A Psalm for the Wild-Built reminds me: yes.
A major shift from science fiction-fantasy’s usually bleak outlook, this “cozypunk” novel holds you close like a warm hug to soothe the tumult within and around you. Chambers’ comforting and inclusive writing will feel like a sort of homecoming (thanks, Bono).
A Psalm for the Wild-Built is for anyone who could use a break.

Owlfred's Corner

Join Owlfred each month to discover the vibrant personalities of the OFPL library staff. This edition features our sparkly Youth Services Assistant, Becky Long, who dedicates herself to teen programming. Becky has earned the esteemed title of  "honorary teen" from the very teens she works with. Cheers to Becky!

What kind of music do you like? Jazz is my go-to, but I also like all things 80s, gospel, classical, big band, heavy metal, strong female singer/songwriters, and a little bit of country. Ok. I just like music. All kinds of music..

If you could get rid of one month out of the year, which month would it be?

July. It is too hot. Give me a crisp fall day anytime.

If you could speak any language, what would it be? Spanish. I have spent a lot of time with people from Spain, Mexico, and Guatemala and I would like a better handle on the language.

What fictional book world would you be a part of?  I would be a part of the magical world of Harry Potter. I could run a magical bookshop or be the librarian at Hogwarts.

Other than a great selection of books, what is something our library offers that you find exceptional?  I like the digital content we have available. Not only the ebooks and audiobooks but also the craft classes offered by Creativebug and the ability to look up genealogy with Ancestry and Family Search.
